My blog is now in its third year of posting the music that’s grabbed me the most, floated my boat, captured my heart during the first six months of the year, in a historically strict twenty-five tracks. Midweek Swoon. March 20th. 2013

with 2 comments

It feels like an exceptionally busy week for music so I thought I’d post a midweek round-up today instead of on the not-so regular Sunday Swoon (by the weekend I predict witterings over Adam Buxton’s BUG, Polica and Wilton’s Music Hall).

1. Vampire Weekend popped up with two new songs this week, Diane Young and Step. A band always synonymous of festivals, the smell of damp grass and the taste of rum and coke for me. Happy to have them back. Both songs being streamed on their website.

2. Suede have released Bloodsports twenty years after their debut album, making me feel exceptionally old. Brett Anderson is still insisting on using words like semaphore, slither, gutters and aerosols in his lyrics but I will always adore this band and Bloodsports hasn’t failed me. It feels like typical Suede and that gets my seal of approval.

3. The internet went into meltdown hyper mode on Sunday evening when Beyoncé released snippets of two new songs Bow Down and I Been On. I am beyond words as I usually am over her, super fan. Just listen. Also this promo for her forthcoming Mrs. Carter tour makes me want to live in her idea of a royal court.

4. The debut album If You Leave from London trio Daughter is released this week. It makes me melancholy and calls regrets to mind. That’s the beauty of music, when an overwhelming emotion or memory arrives from nowhere even on the happiest of days.

You can also listen to the new album Delta Machine from Depeche Mode and watch JT in his new video for Mirrors. Told you it’s a busy week. Back to work.

1. From all the new music this week the spotlight has to be on the unexpected release from David Bowie. In a world where every moment seems to be public, privacy a rare gem and music leaked frequently the fact that this appeared from nowhere adds to the enigma and brilliance of this wonderful man. It’s melancholy, it’s right for a 66-year-old man to lament and ponder on his life. Where Are We Now? is definitely right for this era of Bowie.

2. Just before the above blindsided me I was welcoming back Suede. Barriers is instant, galloping along and I don’t care how jowly Brett Anderson gets with age. I’ll still choose him over Damon without hesitation. You can download it for free here. I’m generally skeptical about Brit pop reunions but he’s poetry to me and I’m hopeful about forthcoming album Bloodsports.

3. And for all those that like their music barefoot and bearded (I hugely do) Devendra Banhart also released new track Für Hildegard von Bingen.

4. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs performed two new songs this week at The Glasshouse in California. They sound raw and rough, like Fever to Tell. Karen O’s stage persona adding weight to her being one of the best front people out there. Why don’t I own a zebra print cape to get stuck in?

The Letter S Mixtape.

I am having a brief respite on a day bookended by two job interviews, done all on a mild to middling hangover and a wonky fringe trim. Music will get me through it. Every indie boys ultimate girl crush St Vincent to a band named after a vibrator. From Sharon Van Etten (possibly my album of the year and my own personal girl crush) to the most perfect love song from Suede.

“Cos on you my tattoo will be bleeding and the name will stain”
